There are many types of fishing rods and choosing the right one for the right purpose is absolutely fundamental to your fishing success. Here we have tried to provide an overview of the main types of rod available.
Spinning Rods are also made from fibreglass or from carbon composites, normally with a cork or foam handle they can be anything from five feet to 10 feet in length. The eyes and the reel are supported on the underside of the rod to control the fishing line, and the eyes decrease in diameter from butt to tip. The rod is held in the stronger hand and the fishing reel operated with the weaker hand as the lure is retrieved. This gives more control and is generally much more comfortable for longer periods of fishing. Spinning is very common and is a successful fishing method for catching pike, perch and eel in freshwater. Longer rods for two handed casting are popular for saltwater fishing and are also used successfully for trolling.
Beach Rods are used for fishing into the surf from a sandy shore, or even from a rocky coastline. They are long (generally between ten and fourteen feet) and strong to be able to cast heavier then usual weight. It is usual to cast out beyond the breaking waves and then retrieve a little to find the best fishing. Six to eight ounces of lead are normally cast in addition to the bait, in order to hold the bottom in the moving water. The line is then drawn taught with the length of the fishing rod then being sufficient to hold the line out of the water above the breaking waves.
